NRG + Vivint Smart Home: How energy and smart home technology work better together

The Challenge

NRG’s acquisition of Vivint created a bold opportunity.

Energy expertise could now be combined with smart home technology — bringing together electricity, automation, and home services in a way few companies could offer.

But the move also raised immediate questions.

Investors, analysts, and stakeholders were skeptical about how a traditional energy company fit together with a smart home platform. The acquisition was closely scrutinized, and the strategic rationale needed to be clearly understood across multiple audiences — from customers to employees to the investment community.

At the same time, the customer story wasn’t obvious.

Energy companies typically communicate about plans, pricing, and kilowatt hours. Smart home companies focus on security systems and connected devices.

To unlock the value of the integration, the brand needed a narrative that made the connection clear — and showed how these capabilities could work together to simplify everyday life.

The Insight

Technology is advancing quickly, but people don’t live in categories. They live in homes.

The real story wasn’t about two companies joining forces.

It was about the home evolving.

Energy, automation, and connected technology are converging into something larger: a home that can actively support comfort, safety, and efficiency.

The narrative needed to shift from individual products to a bigger idea:

A home that works intelligently on behalf of the people living in it.

My Role

I collaborated with marketing and strategy partners to help shape the narrative connecting NRG’s energy services with Vivint’s smart home platform.

My work included:

  • Developing narrative concepts for a simplified smart home landing page

  • Writing homepage and product messaging explaining the connected ecosystem

  • Contributing to broader messaging that framed energy and automation as a unified experience
